The Picts were a Celtic people who lived in Scotland in the early Middle Ages. In Orkney, they were conquered by the Vikings in the 800s. In the same century, the Pictish kingdom in Scotland was merged with the Gaelic. The Picts were a Christian people who were master stonemasons. Their stone sculpture is second to none in Britain. The four symbols here, Eagle, Boar, Crescent and v-rod, Comb and Mirror, recur on many Pictish symbol stones, and may represent the names of powerful Pictish families. Orkney has two famous eagle stones, among others: The Burrian stone and the Brough of Birsay stone.
